Under the supervision of the Head of the Digital Collections Department and in collaboration with Digitization Specialists and other Library Departments, the Digital Collections Intern will work primarily to digitize, apply metadata, and do quality control of digital collections. This internship will focus primarily on Duke University Chronicle and archival manuscript digitization projects.
• Prepares materials for digitization
• Makes digital captures using scanning equipment in the Digital Production Center
• Evaluates digital captures for quality control
• Applies metadata at the item and collection level
• Ingests content into tools and platforms used for digital curation, including CONTENTdm and the Duke Digital Repository
• Collaborates on interface design decisions
• Works with Digital Collections and other library departments to promote digital collections through blog posts and social media.
• Performs other duties related to Digital Collections projects as assigned.

Required: Enrollment in or recent graduate of an accredited graduate archival studies, public history, or information and library science program with a minimum of nine credit hours completed, or enrollment in a related graduate program combined with archival experience or training.
Required: Interest in digitization and digital collections, strong written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, respect for privacy and confidentiality, and strong interest in history.
Preferred: Experience with digital collections; Dublin Core metadata, experience using scanning equipment; familiarity with CONTENTdm and web design.
• Must be able to lift 25 pounds and unpack, shelve and shift large quantities of library materials;
• Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible
• Frequent bending, crouching, stooping

$16.50 per hour (minimum); The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.
This internship is a temporary, part-time position available for 19.5 hours per week for the academic year (9 months). Hours are flexible within a M-F, 8:30-5:00 work week, but assistants are expected to set and maintain a consistent schedule.
