TITLE: Reference and Instruction Librarian
LIBRARY: Wingate University, Ethel K Smith Library
CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time; 12-month Exempt Staff


Reference Service

  • Shares Reference Desk duties with other Librarians by providing assistance to students/faculty/patrons regarding online and traditional searches, etc.
  • Designs weekly Reference Desk schedule
  • Coordinates Reference meetings and agendas
  • Creates materials for Library marketing program including campus newspaper ads, blog entries, etc. in conjunction with the Library Director
  • Functions as Library Liaison for select academic departments
  • Supervises students who assist in Reference area
  • Participates in Reference Collection development and evaluation
  • Fulfills requests for individual reference appointments for students and faculty members
  • Works evenings or weekends, as needed, in the staff rotation


  • Teaches Bibliographic Instruction classes to various members of the University community at any/all campuses (whether face-to-face or online [eg. PolyCom])
  • Pursues the latest technology and teaching styles in order to create effective Instruction classes
  • Develops LibGuides for all classes taught
  • Tailors subject-specific classes based upon professorial request (with appropriate notice)
  • Works with the Library Director to design and conduct programming opportunities and workshops as needed
  • Organizes and prepares Instruction-related data sets

Other Library Assignments

  • Assists in weeding and local holdings maintenance
  • Assists Access Services Manager and Inter-Library Loan Student Assistants with research as needed
  • Provides Circulation support on Sundays (while the University is in session)
  • Participates in general collection development
  • Participates in collection inventories as needed


Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Studies from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Experience delivering Bibliographic Instruction (academic setting preferred)
  • Extreme proficiency in LibGuides
  • Experience with Integrated Library Systems
  • Managerial abilities, analytical skills, flexibility, and creativity in problem solving
  • Demonstrated skill in written and oral communications
  • Ability to work with Library staff, faculty, students, and community patrons
  • Works Sundays-Thursdays while the University is in session

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates with BS in Biology or Second Master’s Degree, specifically in Life Sciences, will be given extreme preference
  • Knowledge of Google Apps such as Mail, Calendar, Documents, and Sites
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office including Publisher
  • Experience with Social Media such as Facebook and blogs
