Orange County Public Library is seeking a 30 hour a week benefited Library Assistant II to work in Youth Services at its Main Branch Library in Hillsborough.

Responsibilities include: planning and implementing programming for grades K-2, assist with collection development for a designated area of the juvenile collection, working on the service desk to answer reader’s advisory and reference questions and computer technology troubleshooting.

In addition to strong interpersonal skills and excellence at written and verbal communication, the individual must be comfortable working collaboratively with other Youth Services staff members in a shared work environment. A positive demeanor and flexibility are essential. The preferred candidate will have a background working with diverse populations, as well as a demonstrated commitment to public service and social equity.

Customer Service: Provides overall excellent customer service and assists patrons with various needs, including but not limited to: readers’ advisory, reference, and technology troubleshooting.

Collection Development: Assists with collection development and maintenance in the Youth Services division.

Division support: Supports special division projects.

Office Duties: Maintains financial records for area of collection development.

Library System-Wide Participation: Participates in the monthly Youth Services staff meetings and may serve as the YS representative at monthly meetings of ad hoc OCPL teams and committees.

Typical Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of library policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal system.
  • Knowledge of reference resources, including computer-based and automated systems.
  • Knowledge of library collections and materials.
  • Knowledge of collection development tools.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer and utilizing a variety of software.
  • Skill in problem solving.
  • Skill in dealing with the public and interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Assignments are accompanied by clear, detailed, and specific instructions. This position generally does not supervise other positions.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of related experience. Must possess, or have the ability to obtain a North Carolina driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree; Experience working in a public library setting, experience working with children, and knowledge of early literacy.

Ability to speak Spanish is preferred but not required.

Physical Activities
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions including: standing, walking, talking, repetitive motions of hands/wrists and feet, grasping, hearing, handing and reaching.
