Job Title: Librarian I, Reference Department Library

Caldwell County, a dynamic rural community with a dedicated library community, is seeking an Adult Reference Librarian. This is a wonderful opportunity for an experienced librarian looking to make a substantial and immediate impact on library service.

An employee in this class performs professional library work in organizing and managing reference services offered by the Main Library. Demonstrates an enthusiastic, self-reliant and self-starting approach to job responsibilities and maintains accountability and a high level of courtesy with the public. Will implement library policies, train staff and coordinate reference services within the Library. Will report to the Library Director and will supervise Library Assistants III/II and volunteers.

Examples of (but not limited to) Duties Performed:

*Determines patron needs and provides direction to library materials and electronic resources.
*Develops the collection of the Reference and Local History departments within budgetary guidelines and weeds materials when appropriate.
*Provides basic instruction, assistance and troubleshooting for computers and other electronic resources.
*Manages department schedule and trains library personnel and volunteers in Reference procedures.
*Assists in preparing the annual budget, recommends long and short term goals and compiles necessary statistics and reports.
*Provides reference support to branch staff and other library departments.
*Plans programming including but not limited to: technology classes, book clubs, job seeking, genealogy, summer reading, etc.
*Maintains directories and indexes of reference resources in County and across the state.
*Works with and evaluates reference staff.
*Updates public website as needed.
*Serves on cross functional, local, regional, and state workgroups and committees, as assigned.
* Performs related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

*Ability to plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate library programs.
* Reviews, evaluates, and select materials for the library based on the Collection Development Policy, community needs, professional reviews, staff recommendations and current composition of the library system collection.
*Working knowledge of library purchasing and acquisitions.
*Considerable knowledge of managerial and supervisory principles and methods.
*Experience in collection maintenance.
*Skill in organizing and prioritizing work in order to cover schedule effectively and efficiently.
*Considerable knowledge of the current principles and practices of library science and the specific needs of a modern reference department.
*Above average familiarity with computer technologies.

*Ability to follow a new or established procedure and to perform work requiring accuracy and detail.
*Ability to explain, demonstrate, and use library tools and resources.
*Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with vendors, library personnel, County staff, community partners, and library users.
*Supervises the creation and distribution of support and collateral materials for library resources and programs.
*Demonstrated success with community partners in collaborative programs and strategic initiatives.
*Must be able to work the required schedule which will include some nights and weekends.
*Must be adaptable to performing appropriately when confronted with people acting under stress.
*Knowledge of Integrated Library Systems and its functions.
*Ability to work and travel from one branch to another and out of county for workshops and training sessions.

Physical Requirements:

Sufficient strength, agility, visual acuity and verbal capability to perform the core requirements of the position which can require operating a variety of machinery and equipment and the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force to lift and/or move objects.

Minimum Education and Training:

Master’s Degree in Library Science from a school accredited by the American Library Association or from a regionally accredited school of higher education which will insure acquisition of N.C. Public Library certification within 6 months. Experience in a public library setting required; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
